The Run for Android 4.0 Boards Continues with Variscite

After Pandaboard.org announcement of the release of Pandaboard ES board with Android 4.0 support, another major system on modules vendor Variscite is preparing to provide its own development board for Android 4.0 embedded development. New from PandaBoard – PandaBoard ES OMAP4460 with Android 4 Support

Pandaboard.org announced (Dec. 7th) their latest new development – PandaBoard ES, based on Texas Instruments OMAP4460 with Dual ARM Cortex A-9, 1.2GHz.

With the support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, this latest news is promising for the mobile open source software development. Among the various features, notable are the low energy Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support, Display Serial Interface (DSI) support with the current PandaBoard’s HDMI, Digital Video Interface (DVI) and DPI support. Still, this seems to be a bit slower than another OMAP4460 board on the market today, the VAR-SOM-OM44, which runs up to 1.5GHz. Yet, its relatively low cost (USD $182) is also an opportunity for new comers of this industry and testers who wish to develop on the new speedy platform.
